Public Meeting Commemorating Black History Month
Breaking the Silence National Tour
More than six million people have been killed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) over the past 15 years. The United Nations says it is the deadliest conflict in the world since World War Two. In the wake of the conflict, US-backed despots have kept the people of the region in a virtual death trap.
Congolese youth are rising up to change the equation under the guise of the #Telema Movement (Rise up in Lingala).
We have a very special guest directly from the Congo to give a first-hand account of why the #Telema movement is vital to the future of the Congo and Africa. Ben Kabamba of the Youth For A New Society was at the forefront of the latest uprising in the Congo on January 19 - 22 that claimed 42 lives at the hands of Congo's security forces.
Mr. Kabamba will be joined by Maurice Carney, co-founder & Executive Director of the Friends of the Congo, who recently returned from the Congo. He will also provide eyewitness account of this rarely covered part of the world where the CIA overthrew Congo's first elected Prime Minister and Independence hero, Patrice Emery Lumumba.
Discussion will follow presentations.
$5-10 donation (no one turned away for lack of funds)
Wheelchair accessible. Refreshments provided.
