In the run up to the March for Real Climate Leadership, anti-fracking activists are hitting the road and touring the state to bring together Californians in common cause. They'll be highlighting the different ways the fossil fuel industry is ravaging our communities, our health, our water, and our future.
The tour will be made up of several evening panel discussion events showcasing how everyday Californians are in the fight of their lives against all aspects of the fossil fuel economy including extraction, infrastructure, chemicals and toxicity, as well as the industry’s assault on sustainable businesses and innovation.
Tour Stops: (all 7-9 pm)
• 1/12-San Diego: King-Chavez Charter High School
• 1/13-Los Angeles: Holman United Methodist Church 3320 West Adams Blvd
• 1/14-Oxnard: Oxnard Heritage Cultural Center 141 W. 5th St.
• 1/15-Santa Barbara: Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara, 1535 Santa Barbara St.
• 1/16-Delano: CRPE Offices 1012 Jefferson St.
• 1/17-San Juan Bautista: Veterans of Foreign Wars 58 Monterey Street
There will be 3 panel discussions featuring speakers from adjacent counties (Monterey, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara and San Benito):
1) How Local Communities are Protecting Themselves From Fossil Fuel Extraction
2) Green Solutions: Local Solar & Wind Projects (Gonzales, Soledad, Santa Cruz & San Juan Bautista)
3) Sustainable Agriculture & Communities
This is a free regional event, organized by San Benito Rising, and it enables grassroots folks from several counties to network and share ideas about climate solutions.
(Did you know that San Juan Bautista city council passed a resolution in June 2014 to become a "Model Green City"? San Benito Rising is working to make this vision a reality!)
• 1/18-Oakland: California Nurses Association 2000 Franklin Street
Facebook page details for Oakland:
On Sunday, January 18, the run-up to the historic March for Real Climate Leadership begins with an Oakland forum on “Organizing at the Crossroads: What Real Climate Leadership Looks Like,” one of seven forums to be held throughout the state on the community impacts of the gas and oil industry.
Come hear an inspiring panel of real climate leaders who are not afraid to face this challenge head on: newly elected Assemblyperson Tony Thurmond of AD 15 and Richmond City Councilperson Eduardo Martinez; Mary Lim Lampe of Genesis and Gamaliel; a representative of the California Nurses Association; community organizers Andrés Soto of Communities for a Better Environment and Margaret Gordon of the West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project. Pennie Opal Plant offers the opening invocation. Forum MC is New Yorkers Against Fracking co-founder and Californians Against Fracking organizer, David Braun. Other speakers TBA.
This tour is a precursor to the February 7 March for Real Climate leadership. Learn more about that event at:
