Block the Militarization of Local Police
Date:
Friday, December 19, 2014
Time:
5:00 PM
-
8:00 PM
Event Type:
Protest
Organizer/Author:
Bloc the Tank Collective
Location Details:
General Assembly and initial picket spot near parking garage entrance at Soquel and Front, across from New Leaf.
City Council recently refused to pass a non-binding recommendation that their new Obama Armored Attack Vehicle not be used against peaceful protesters. This refusal amounts to a de facto declaration of civil war against the People of Santa Cruz by the Santa Cruz City Council.
This moral outrage is completely unacceptable.
It is time for us to get serious about protecting our 1st Amendment right to protest.
It is time for us to design protests that deny the local government its precious income.
It is time for us to picket the parking lots downtown.
Pickets and boycotts are constitutionally protected forms of protest. They can not be legally stopped by police action. Only by our own laziness, impatience, or lack of discipline.
The City gets income from several parking lots downtown, the more people who participate, the more parking lots we can picket.
Pickets can be time consuming compared to a march or a rally. On the other hand, pickets are far more effective and it only takes a few people to picket a parking lot entrance. It is also very easy to measure how well we are doing by the number of cars who turn away and the number of empty spaces left in the lot.
NOW IS THE TIME ACT. The City also gets income from sales tax, and a parking picket and boycott will likely impact the shopping downtown, in our favor, during the busiest time of the year.
Have a Happy Bill of Rights Day!

Protest called on account of rain. 2 days after this protest was posted here a local paper reported that the City had decided to give all parking revenues for the week prior to Christmas to a local charity.
