Santa Cruzans Block Streets, Stage Die-In during Day of Protest Against Police Violence
On December 13, community members in Santa Cruz joined people across the country for a national day of protest against police violence. The focus of the protests have primarily been on the police killings of three black individuals, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and Tamir Rice, which all came to national attention in 2014. After a rally at the Town Clock, demonstrators marched down Pacific Avenue to the corner of Cooper Street where a die in was held for 4 1/2 minutes, which represented the 4 1/2 hours that Michael Brown's body lay dead in the street after he was killed by Ferguson, MO police officer Darren Wilson in August. [Top photo: Die-in on Pacific Avenue. Scroll down for more photos.]
As people laid down on Pacific Avenue, a large crowd formed, speakers were heard, and traffic was stopped. Demonstrators also stopped traffic during a short rally at the corner of Pacific and Soquel Avenue, and then again on Ocean Street in front of the Resource Center for Nonviolence (RCNV), which was the ultimate destination of the march.
At the RCNV, organizers of the demonstration gave a presentation titled, "White Supremacy, Violence and the Criminal Justice System."
Santa Cruz Food Not Bombs served food, and the protest included participation by members of Project: Pollinate, Santa Cruz County NAACP, Resource Center for Nonviolence, Cabrillo College Justice League, Santa Cruz County Community Coalition to Overcome Racism, Sin Barras, AF3IRM Central Coast, Homeless United for Friendship and Freedom, and Santa Cruz WILPF.

I like the photos.
Today on Free Radio, I played audio segments from and commented on the Protest. To check it out, skip through the 4 hour show to zero in on portions that hold interest for you. I was particularly critical of the march leadership for discouraging and dispersing the Ocean St. line of folks on the pedestrian strip that stopped traffic briefly as shown in the next to the last photo. It was not at all clear that "eliminating the blockade" and moving people into the Resource Center was the wish of the majority there.
Thanks to the organizers, however, for publicizing and encouraging the get together and doing it all without asking permission (i.e. seeking permits).

Thanks for covering the protest and march so well!

and very well attended. this was promoted expertly, an even better job than the promoter we lost could have done.
Glad to see Santa Cruzans out protesting. Not glad to see a sign calling police pigs. Suggest the person who made that sign do some investigating about what happens to the 110 million pigs raised for food and slaughtered in America each year. Cops are oppressors and pigs are oppressed. http://www.foodispower.org/pigs/
i do not recognize anyone's authority to dictate what words i use. your argument is novel though, usually people don't want us to offend the cops by calling them pigs. i have to assume you are joking, because pigs don't really mind when we call cops pigs.
and it is not as if we were calling pigs "police", THAT would be offensive to the animals.

could be done in militarized police costume to give the public a taste of where the police want to take our community. some of those parking lots have gates that would look very police state with a uniformed guard standing beside asking for your papers.
it is a crime to impersonate an officer, so might be best to wear one of those vests with big yellow letters that say "not a pig".

Project Pollinate Executive Director Dru Glover describes how the march at the Santa Cruz Ferguson Solidarity Protest will continue. He repeats a speech in Charlie Chaplain's first speaking role — an indictment of Fascism — ushering in a modern humanist age steeped in human love, compassion and kindness. It's a call for progress and bringing power back to the people.
This is an indictment of those stoking hate filled agendas. It's a call to people's better angels.

Watch out for the guillotine effect in a few of the videos (cutting off the head).
Thank you Robert. I noticed the head chopping when viewing the videos on my computer. Unfortunately the tiny camera screen sometimes makes it difficult to notice that when recording...I'll try better!
