John Poole wrote Rinya while he was teaching full-time as a science teacher at Malcolm X Elementary School. This courageous story of a boy growing up in his tribe in the Bay Area in the 1700’s when the Spanish arrived to unravel his culture is beautifully illustrated by three renowned artists. John will discuss with the children how he came to write the story and answer their questions.

Also appearing is Kanyon Sayers-Roods who has written and produced Indian Canyon, a coloring book for children keyed to the Mutsun language of her people. Kanyon will sing and present elements of her culture to school children who may already be aware of many aspects of Ohlone culture.

Cookies, fruit and non-sugary drinks will be served, and copies of the books will be available for sale and signing.
