Nonviolence, Dissidence & the Occupation
An Evening of Talk, Poetry, Music & Food with
Moriel Rothman-Zecher,
Israeli-American Activist, Refusenik, and spoken word poet
Moriel Rothman-Zecher will speak about his experiences as an activist in the Israeli anti-occupation movement over the past three years. He will share stories about organizing nonviolent protests against settlements and occupation in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, his experience as a conscientious objector and in military prison, and about recent demonstrations against the Gaza War in Tel Aviv. His talk will include several spoken word poems and will be followed by time for questions and discussion. There will also be music and food provided throughout the evening.
Born in Jerusalem, Moriel has worked as a field activist in the Occupied Palestinian Territories with Rabbis for Human Rights, and as an independent organizer. In the Fall 2012, Moriel publicly refused to serve in the Israeli military and was jailed. After his release, he helped found the All That's Left anti-occupation collective, with which he is active today. His writings have appeared in Sojourners Magazine, the Berkeley Journal of Sociology, Haaretz, +972 Magazine and more. He blogs independently at http://www.thelefternwall.com.
