Screening of Freedom Summer film with Linda Wetmore Halpern, a participant in Freedom Summer. In 1964, 700 students from the North went to Mississippi to register African Americans to vote and to set up Freedom Schools to teach African American history and culture. They courageously braved intimidation, arrests, death threats, and beatings. Mississippi officials increased police forces and purchased riot gear and weapons. Three civil rights workers, Mickey Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James Chaney went missing and were later found dead. Linda Wetmore Halpern went to Mississippi as a college student and her life was threatened by a group of white racists. She has been a teacher for over 40 years.
