The FMLN presidential candidate Salvador Sánchez Cerén won the second round of presidential elections on March 9, 2014 by a slim margin, another milestone in a long historic struggle by the FMLN moving from the margins to tentative power in a country deeply polarized and long dominated by the U.S. Now with the ruling classes gradually losing their grip on power, the right-wing ARENA party refuses to accept the election results, throwing the country into a political crisis.

Richard Hobbs and Sharat G. Lin will report after serving as accredited international observers to the election.
