LOOP Presents: Soundies! (16mm/B&W/Color/Sound/70 min.)
LOOP Presents: Soundies! is a cinematic jukebox of rare musical films from the origins of sound on film until it's decline with Scopitone technology. A musical Kaleidoscope of film shorts, this program highlights the earliest examples of sound on film until it's decline. We take a look at an anthology of rare jazz performances on film.
Today, Soundies are perhaps best known for preserving rare performances of African-American artists who had fewer opportunities to perform in films. Artists such as Fats Waller, Louis Jordan, Big Joe Turner, Lena Horne, Louis Armstrong, and Nat King Cole all made Soundies. Several well-known acts of the 1960's also appear in Scopitone films, however, ranging from the earlier part of the decade like, The Exciters.
