On Saturday, October 26, on the eve of the spookiest night of the year, sometimes celebrated as Samhain, ATA Gallery's OTHER CINEMA presents the NorCal PREMIERE of Spine-Tingler! The William Castle Story, preceded by Christian Divine's mad-genius survey of Pop-Monster youth culture in mid-century America.
Through the '50s and '60s, master showman William Castle directed a series of horror films with outrageous audience-participation gimmicks, treating viewers to buzzing seats, flying skeletons, and luminescent ghosts. Jeffrey Schwarz' clip-packed doc is a riveting rags-to-riches tale of this exploitation legend.
ALSO, AND IN PERSON: Our favorite cult-film-monger Christian Divine sets the historical context with his 40-min. show-and-tell "Monster Kids: Pop-Horror Kulture of the 1960s." Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine, Universal Studios genre revivals, Aurora model kits, and TV-horror hosts are among the Cult Studies requirements covered in his energized and insightful overview of this crazy fandom.
Come early—and in costume!—for rare horror bits, free Trick-or-Treats, gothic drink specials, and stone-cold CHEAP DVD sales offer: 2 OCD Experiments in Terror discs for only $9.99!!
