In 1994, youths from the communities of Watsonville organized the 1st Annual Peace and Unity March in order to address the on going violence in the community, particularly after the slaying of two young people ages 9 and 16.
The Peace and Unity March has been a safe space for families of victims and our local community to come together to organize an event to speak out against violence in the streets in South Santa Cruz County.
Today, the march is still organized by local youth, community groups and the growing number of families who have lost loved ones to violence.
Says one march organizer, Sep Susunaga, "I think the peace and unity march is crucial in ensuring that we remain aware of the violence happening around us...this serves as motivation for community members to come together and help shape a safer environment and come up with ways to prevent violence."
Peace and Unity March will take place on Saturday, November 2nd, also known as Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. We will have altares in the Watsonville Plaza in remembrance.
