Event: Chookasian Ensemble’s Traditional Armenian songs and dances of Eastern and historic Western Armenia, performed by our conservatory graduate musicians from Armenia and the USA; that will be played on acoustic folk instruments found in Armenia for centuries. Also, the award-winning competition students of the Clovis High School Jazz Band ‘A’ will be performing separately and together with the Armenian Ensemble. Featured performers for the Oct. 12, 2013 concert will be: John Chookasian, Director & clarinetist; Barbara Chookasian, principal vocalist; Vergine Alimian, ‘kanun’ (72 stringed lap harp); Vladimir Grigoryan, ‘kemenche’ (folk violin); Norik Manoukyan, ‘duduk,’ ‘zurna’ & ‘sh’vi’ (Armenian flutes); Andranik Mouradian, keyboards; Hayk Nalbandian, ‘dumbeg,’ ‘d’hol’ & ‘deff’ (folk percussion instruments); ‘FLYING in from NEW YORK,’ especially for this performance, John Tarpinian, ‘oud’ (folk lute). The Chookasian Ensemble is famed for weaving in Armenian stories and traditions associated with each musical piece performed, thereby connecting the audience with the music and the lore. We performed our sixth highly successful Armenian concert event for the Freight & Salvage Concert Hall in Berkeley, CA on February 23, 2013. The “Chookasian Armenian Concert Ensemble’s” was the 1st Place Winner of the “2010 International Armenian Grammy Awards” Celebration; that was held at the world-famous 7,000 seat Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, CA. Our live concert CD was selected from thousands of CD submissions from around the world. Former Mayor Willie Lewis Brown, Jr. presented the Chookasian Armenian Concert Ensemble with a “Certificate of Honor’ from the City & County of San Francisco. We are also Armenia’s ‘National Gold Medal Award’ Winners; The award was presented to us from the President of Armenia, Mr. Robert Kocharian, after our one-month concert and festival tour of Armenia.
