San Jose State University: Tell SJSU Not To Cut the African-American Studies Department
Petition: San Jose State University: Tell SJSU Not To Cut the African-American Studies Department
Departments at SJSU are being cut in the name of "efficiency", while the students that are investing their time and money are being negatively impacted by these cuts. This petition is to address department closures and prevent further department closures of the African-American Studies Department. African-American Studies provides a space for students to learn their history and the history of other cultures and is a resource for classes and information that would not be learned otherwise. The University has not given this department the necessary attention it needs to grow and be a sustainable and viable department on campus. By not providing adequate resources, the University has let the department deteriorate into a state in which it's department status is threatened. In response, we demand:
Keep the African-American Studies Department as is; in it's own entity and with major status of the addition of two tenure track faculty to the African-American Studies Department. The University needs to commit resources to support ethnic studies majors and programs as a part of the Diversity Initiatives to increase retention of culturally diverse students.
