Regeneration Festival is an annual four-day ceremony and celebration that began in Taos, New Mexico with sister celebrations now occurring throughout the world. This year, The Mending News is honored to extend the Regeneration Festival to OAKLAND CA, with Lake Merritt as the centering point.
The Regeneration Festival began as a proactive response to Taos' incredibly high suicide, homicide and overdose rates among youth. It has since become a worldwide, non-commercial and drug-free festival to honor all young people as brilliant, beautiful, cherished beings on Earth. Through the festival and other means, we hope to build a world that inspires and embraces our children anew each day.
Regeneration Festival is not just a celebration, it is also a ceremony. The four days are designed to honor the four sacred directions so that we may cultivate beauty all around us. The festival is modeled after the medicine wheel of the Lakota Indigenous Society. While all traditions are respected and honored throughout the event, the Lakota medicine wheel was chosen for a festival framework because within it is contained the prophecy that one day all the races of the earth will unite, black, red, yellow, and white to make the world whole and healthy again.
Festival organizers understand that whether we are Euro-American, Indigenous, Asianic, African Descent, Chicana, or Mixed heritage, we all have children and they are going to have to live under one sky. The mission of Regeneration Festival is a human endeavor and will only be done together.
“If you've come here to help me, you're wasting your time. But if you've come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.” -Lilla Watson
