The SF Bay World Can't Wait chapter will be out the seventh month of the Guantanamo hunger strike, with a series of events to remind the public of the horrific stalemate of indefinite detention endured by 166 prisoners for over a decade, many of whom have never been charged of a crime.
As of July 30, 68 Guantanamo prisoners are still on hunger strike. Forty-four are being force-fed. Out of “respect” for Ramadan, soldiers insert their feeding tubes at night. The de facto torture these men suffer in the name of "protecting Americans" cannot in any way be morally justified.
It is up to us to stand for principle and justice when our institutions and public officials refuse to do so. Charge or release. We demand immediate freedom for 86 cleared prisoners and others illegally held, and a fair trial for the 6 formally charged.
Act Against Torture has gifted us their portable Guantanamo prison cell which we premiered on August 2nd (photo: First Friday in Oakland).
If you too are anguished that the Guantanamo prisoners' plea has met with such thundering silence in the media, come out with World Can't Wait for hunger strike vigils in the coming weeks.
Break the silence. Reach out to more people who need to be part of this.
