Writers With Drinks sends you back to school with science fiction, poetry and boxing!
When: Saturday, August 10, 2013, 7:30 to 9:30 PM, doors open at 6:30 PM
Who: Hannu Rajaniemi, Natalie Serber, Aimee Phan, Matt Shears, Mike the Boxer and Susan Calvillo
Where: The Make Out Room, 3225 22nd. St., San Francisco
How much: $5 to $10 sliding scale, all proceeds benefit the CSC
About the writers/readers:
Hannu Rajaniemi is the author of The Quantum Thief, The Fractal Prince and the forthcoming The Causal Angel. The Quantum Thief came in third place in the John W. Campbell Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. He also published a story collection, Words of Birth and Death.
Natalie Serber is the author of Shout Her Lovely Name, and her work has appeared in Knowing Pains: Women on Love, Sex and Work in our 40s, and Air Fare: Stories, Essays and Poems on Flight. She's working on a novel.
Aimee Phan is the author of The Reeducation of Cherry Truong. Her first book We Should Never Meet was named a Notable Book by the Kiryama Prize in fiction and a finalist for the 2005 Asian American Literary Awards. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, USA Today, Guernica, The Rumpus, and The Oregonian.
Michael the Boxer runs "the San Francisco gym where the technorati go for a bloody good workout." He's the author of Fear Into Fuel: Empower the Ageless Fighter Within, plus Boxing: The American Martial Art and Boxing Advanced Tactics and Strategies. He's also a barber, who offers haircuts in his boxing gym.
Matt Shears is the author of 10,000 Wallpapers (Brooklyn Arts Press 2011) and Where a road had been (BlazeVOX 2010). His poetry has been featured in The Boston Review, Colorado Review, Denver Quarterly, Volt, Notre Dame Review, and Cutbank, among other journals.
Susan Calvillo blogs at Potential Cadavers. She's an MFA student and her poetry has appeared in New American Writing and Nameless Magazine.

Writers With Drinks won "Best Literary Night" from the SF Bay Guardian readers' poll six years in a row and was named "Best Literary Drinking" and "Best Literary Hour" by the SF Weekly. And it was namechecked in Armistead Maupin's latest Tales of the City novel. The spoken word "variety show" mixes genres to raise money for local worthy causes. The award-winning show includes poetry, stand-up comedy, science fiction, fantasy, romance, mystery, literary fiction, erotica, memoir, zines and blogs in a freewheeling format.
