The 1965 Watts Riots rippled through Los Angeles, resulting in destruction of much of the black community as well as the reservoir of progress that had developed against discrimination. “More Than a Riot: The Joyce Ann Gaines Story”, takes personal accounts of the Watts Riots and examines the social repercussions of this major event and how it is still affecting us today. Until this film, no one has had the chance to interview Joyce Ann Gaines. Credited by “Life Magazine”, “The Los Angeles Times” and the 1966 novel “Burn, Baby, Burn”, as the spark the ignited the Watts Riots, Joyce speaks on camera about her major role in the riots, as well as the life she lived before and after. Documentary Filmmakers, Dorothy Holford and Leonard Smith will be presenting the premiere of their film trailer, as well as selected scenes followed by a commentary and Q&A session. Some of the discussion topics will include social injustice, the Watts Riots as a catalyst, and obstacles faced by Black Filmmakers today. “More Than a Riot” is more than half way through production and is seeking funding for completion.
