Represent for those who are being silenced and abused by our government
A week past Obama’s renewed and hollow rhetoric about his “wanting” to close Guantánamo, the crisis intensifies. Every day that this hunger strike continues, men are being force-fed to avoid the public relations nightmare of further prisoner death within the torture camp. These men would rather die than continue captivity in this hellhole.
Obama's platitudes for renewed purpose represent no “fresh start” for Guantanamo prisoners. Many of the strikers may have passed the threshold for physical recovery let alone resumption of normal activity. As the President reportedly agonizes over his dereliction of leadership in restoring their fundamental right to due process, lives are on the line.
Meanwhile our government works to silence the voices of conscience who expose policies of torture and murder of civilians, most flagrantly in the slander and draconian legal charges against Bradley Manning, the courageous 25-year-old U.S. soldier facing court-martial as a whistleblower exposing war crimes. We will stand in solidarity with protest actions at Fort Meade, Maryland on the eve of Bradley's court martial.
