Mark Zuckerberg Goes Pro XL Pipeline, Demonstrators Protest at Facebook HQ

by Reynita R.
Last week, Mark Zuckerberg's new lobbying group spent money on ads to advocate for the Keystone XL pipeline. In response, environmental activists rallied outside Facebook headquarters today.

Demonstrators built a pipeline on the lawn in front of Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park today. Protesters in hazmat suits, bright colored safety work vests, and hard hats posed as a toxic disaster clean-up crew. One of the Raging Grannies carried a mop for a grandmotherly style clean-up. Activists asked, "how'd you like a toxic oil mess in YOUR front yard, Facebook?"

One creative sign read "Hey there, Zuck. Tar sands suck, so keep your bucks, or we're all f***ed." (see photo)

Environmentalists said that were appalled that a lobbying group, co-founded by Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and others in the tech industry, called FWD.US bills itself as a bipartisan entity dedicated to passing immigration reform, but has spent considerable resources on ads advocating anti-environmental causes including promoting construction of the the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline.

Police presence was surprisingly heavy.

Police and Security said "off the grass in front of the big sign" and used "private Property" as the reason, but demonstrators posed for photos with the famous symbol nevertheless

When are Political Activists going to leave Facebook in droves?????? It is really stupid to let everyone including Homeland Security know what your plans and strategy are.

When are we going to organize off the Internet???????

The Noose of the Techno-Police State is getting ever tighter around our necks.
Secrecy is not the issue here. We want our events to be known to a wide swath of people and thus want the media there. This is not a failure of intelligence.

True, it is a concern that privacy has all but disappeared, but at this point for this issue the idea is to get the word out: Exploiting tar sands oil and moving it through this kind of pipeline is an environmental disaster. It also won't make fuel any more available or affordable and will create far fewer jobs than investing in alternative energy.

It is evil for Zuck to use his billions to push for it.
