On April 6th, Sin Barras and allies held a march and speakout to demand an end to inhumane conditions inside the Santa Cruz county jail, where at least four inmates have died since August 2012. Outside of the jail, many more have died due to lack of homeless services and drug treatment programs.
During the speakout, people shared powerful personal stories of struggle and resistance that shed light on the violence of the prison system and strategies for resistance.
*This community forum is a follow-up, intended to continue the struggle against jails and prisons through education and collective organization. Sin Barras will provide an overview of what's currently happening around CA prisons and realignment policies, and then we will split into three groups to discuss:
- Immigration and deportations
- Criminalization of poverty
- Conditions inside the county jail
Group discussion will be facilitated by a community member who is currently working on the issue, but the meeting will be run democratically and non-hierarchically so every voice is heard. We invite everyone who has a story to share or who is simply concerned with the mass injustices taking place in our community.
Let's get organized!
