"The Power of the People" shows the gains of the Chilean people under president Salvador Allende prior to the US-backed fascist coup that brought the brutal Pinochet regime into power in 1973.

Filmmaker Patricio Guzmán documents the creation by ordinary workers and peasants of thousands of local groups of "popular power" to distribute food, occupy, guard and run factories and farms, and link together neighborhood social service organizations. First these "popular power" groups acted to defend against strikes and lock-outs by factory owners and professional entities opposed to the Allende government. Then they began to demand more resolute action by the government against the rightwing. (78 min., 1978)

Discussion will follow the film.
