TRANSFORMATIVE VISIONS
"An explosion of love, set to jazz!"
That’s the way one person described this dynamic event. For the fifth year, Oakland-based nonprofit, OneLife Institute, will present Transformative Visions, a multimedia art show and spoken word/jazz concert with a message of peace, justice, healing, and possibility.
The event uses the arts to address issues like violence, poverty, racism, and the environment, but instead of simply describing the problems, seeks to provide a vision of hope beyond the current conditions. It is intended to both challenge and inspire, offering a spiritually-rooted response to the critical concerns of the present day.
Transformative Visions centers on the power of the arts to heal, activate, and build community. Scheduled to coincide with the annual observance of A Season for Nonviolence, Transformative Visions will take place on Saturday, March 16th from 2:00PM – 5:00PM at the Studio One Art Center, 365 - 45th St., in Oakland.
We are excited to present jazz all-stars, the Destiny Muhammad Project (Destiny Muhammad on harp and vocals, Fred Harris on piano, E.W. Wainwright on drums, Gary Brown on upright bass) with special guests, pianist Tammy Hall, and Sistahs of the Drum.
Spoken word artists will perform original works with a message of positive social change: * Ambessa the Articulate * Freedom Reign * Itoro Udofia * LEX * Nakia "Precious Gift" Dillard * Sandra Hooper Mayfield * Telejon Quinn.
The visual art exhibit will be on display from March 9th through the week of April 8th. More than 20 Bay Area artists, working in a wide range of styles and media, are participating. They include: * Abba Yahudah * Alonzo Young * April Martin Chartrand * Brett Cook * Bryan Keith Thomas * Damon Powell * Daniel Zarazua * Eesuu Orundide * George Hopkins * James Gayles * Kris Washington-Carroll * Lorraine Bonner * Malik Seneferu * Mildred Thompson * Nia Jourdan * Pablo Soto Campoamor * Ras Terms * Safetyfirst * Salma Arastu * TaSin Sabir * Wanda Sabir * William Rhodes * Xiomara Castro * Zena Allen.
