In this three-session intro series we'll explore the many layers of climate solutions, from urban farms to personal action plans. The series is a perfect fit for those wanting to develop some basic knowledge about climate change, be exposed to models of successful community solutions, and build relationships with other engaged community members.
Session 1: Nuts and Bolts - Gather with a small group of community members to swap information, resources, and solutions for taking action on climate change.
Session 2: Field Day - Get out in the streets, run your hands through the dirt, see and create sustainable infrastructure. This series' field trip: Work party and potluck at Urban Adamah -- a one acre farm and educational center, nestled in the urban core of West Berkeley. Come help the farmers tend and prepare their next round of spring crops. We'll be seeding, transplanting, weeding, preparing beds, and cutting winter cover crops in order to make room for more spring plants on the farm. And check out the farm's greenhouses, chickens, bees, teaching tents, and more! We'll break for a potluck, so bring a vegetarian dish to share if you can. ( http://urbanadamah.org ).
Session 3: EcoHouse Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Tour - Draw inspiration from a survey of do-it-yourself projects including our living roof; our ground-breaking constructed wetlands and simple laundry greywater systems; an 1100 gallon rainwater cistern; a native rain garden; natural building; solar panels; a food forest; three kinds of compost, and much more. Though this tour is an overview and occurs outside, you'll gain a sense of what's possible for an urban home.
Dates, Times, and Locations for this Series Session #1: Tuesday, March 19, 6:30-8:30pm at the Ecology Center, 2530 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley. Wheelchair accessible.
Session #2: Sunday, March 24, 2-5pm at Urban Adamah. 1050 Parker St (at San Pablo), Berkeley. Participants should wear closed toe shoes, bring a water bottle and, if possible, a vegetarian potluck dish to share. Wheelchair accessible.
Session #3: Saturday, March 30, 11am-1pm at EcoHouse. 1305 Hopkins St., Berkeley. Enter via garden entrance on Peralta.
