Over the holidays, the FDA notified us that they are ready to release genetically engineered salmon into our food supply. We are
now in the 60 day comment period before final approval. The FDA would like nothing more than to push this approval under a rug to
avoid any public attention about their decision. The mainstream media has neglected to inform the public about this dangerous new
development which leaves an awareness campaign up to our organizations.
FDA says escape is unlikely and that the fish pose “no impact” to the environment. But each year millions of farmed salmon escape, outcompeting wild populations for resources and straining ecosystems. Any approval of GE salmon would represent a serious threat to the survival of native salmon populations, many of which have already suffered severe declines related to salmon farms and other man-made impacts. Additionally, the human health impacts of eating GE fish, which would be the first-ever GE food animal, are entirely unknown.
What are we going to do about it?
Global Day of Action - Protest GE Salmon on Saturday, February 9th. Activists all over the country are being called on to create a show of unity against GE Salmon by holding public awareness events such as rallies, protests, flash mobs, radio shows or any other type of awareness events.
Global Days of Action is hosting these events and offers a tool kit of options for activists to use. If you are in the our area, please join us at this rally in Santa Cruz.. we would love for you to take part in it! Please RSVP here or gmofreesc [at] gmail.com
