Worried in Koodankulam: Nuclear Safety and Public Protests in India
A talk by M.V. Ramana
This talk will describe the recent protests and the history of opposition to the Koodankulam nuclear reactors in southern India. It will examine both how nuclear authorities view risk and the operating experience in India's nuclear facilities over the decades, testing this experience against organizational factors that have been identified as coincident with reliable and accident-free operations.
M. V. Ramana obtained his Ph.D. in Physics from Boston University in 1994 and joined Princeton’s Program on Science and Global Security (SGS) in 1998. Between 2004 and 2009, he was at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Environment and Development in Bangalore, India. Ramana is the author of The Power of Promise: Examining Nuclear Energy in India, recently published by Penguin. He is a member of the Science and Security Board of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists and the International Panel on Fissile Materials.
Suggested donation $5-10 (no one turned away)
