Fundraiser for Justice in Appalachia: Support Coalfield Organizers
When: Wed October 24th, 7pm
Where: Mercury Cafe, 201 Octavia Street, San Francisco, CA 94102
Junior Walk was raised in the coalfields of West Virginia, a place where mountaintop removal coal mining poisoned the water that comes out of his faucet. In a mining community, it takes a lot of courage to buck the company, but Junior has become a leader in an organizing effort to stop mountaintop removal. Not only is he working with his community members for community health and safety, he actively participates in a direct action campaign against mountaintop removal. He's coming to the Bay Area to share his story, and ask for your support. Brandon Nida works in Blair, a community that has no clean water, and is the site of the largest labor battle in US history, the Battle of Blair Mountain. All that stands to be stripped away. Come hear them speak about the campaign for justice in Appalachia. Music after the speaking event.
Speaker: Junior Walk , Activist with Coal River Mountain Watch (http://www.crmw.net), Brandon Nida, Blair Mountain Heritage Alliance
Cost: $5-$20 Donations, no one turned away for lack of funds
Sponsored by Rising Tide North America
