MoLOve, one of Oakland's brightest and longest standing youth and community development groups will host MoLOve Mardi Gras – Savannah Style Party on Oct 5th during the First Friday festivities in downtown Oakland. This special fundraising event starts at 6pm and ends at 10pm. Location will be on Telegraph Ave between 21st and 22nd Street. The event brings together people, music and cultures from around the world under the themes of fun, love and excitement as it celebrates the power of art, music and carnival to revitalize MoLOve's youth development program.
Established in 1994, MoLOve was started by LaMantia and Kenneth Charles, Hugh Humphrey,Wilfred Mark, Anthony 'Cannon' Hernandez, Desmond 'Finey' Bedlow of Trinidad & Tobago, Michelle Gregor, Kitty Rivera, Regina Calloway and others. A group of artists, musicians and community builders who have collaborated using music and art as an agent of social change & community development. Their mission is to unite Oakland’s diverse groups of artists, community, entrepreneurs and youth to create a new model of community celebration, cooperation, and self sustaining.
The latest production MoLOve Mardi Gras is an Interactive Art and Mass participation event born directly of out of love for Caribbean culture and carnival, made famous by traditions that appear globally each year in places like Trinidad, Brazil, Italy, and New Orleans. The theme for the presentation is Pirates and Sailors.
MoLOve Mardi Gras - Savannah Style Party will commence at 6pm on Telegraph Ave. Registration will also be available at the event for a nominal donation of your choice between $10 - $30. Come dressed in your favorite pirate or sailor costume and get ready to share the experience of world cultures in a dynamic fusion of art and music - Trinidad, New Orleans, California, Burning Man, Brazil etc. all channeled in to one exciting jamboree.
Feel the rhythms of the great sounds of Caribbean Steel drums as we alight the streets with music.
See the awesome displays by the Art Cars / Floats direct from the Burning Man showcase in Nevada.
Be a part of the costumed patrons of merry Sailors of Peace and Pirates of Love
Be entertained by the captivating sounds of calypso, soca and reggae music by our featured DJ's
Dress your best! Claim the prize for the best costumes on the day of the event.
Toss Mardi Gras beads and share in the joy of the occasion
Complimentary food and drinks will be served to supporting patrons.
