Quail Lodge Workers Ratify New Contract
Union workers at the Quail Lodge approved a 5-year labor contract through December 31, 2017, which calls for more than $5 per hour in additional wages and benefits over the life of the agreement, as well as providing job protections in the event the resort sells to a new owner. The workers, members of UNITE HERE Local 483, voted yesterday, September 24, 2012, at Quail Lodge with 95% approval. The contract now covers 40 cooks, dishwashers, servers, hosts, greens and maintenance workers. When the hotel reopens next year, the agreement would also apply to the hotel workers.
QUAIL LODGE WORKERS RATIFY NEW CONTRACT - CONTRACT WILL COVER FUTURE HOTEL WORKERS
Carmel Valley, CA. Union workers at the Quail Lodge approved a 5-year labor contract through December 31, 2017, which calls for more than $5 per hour in additional wages and benefits over the life of the agreement, as well as providing job protections in the event the resort sells to a new owner. The terms of the agreement include a wage bonus in 2013 of up to $1,000, and additional hourly wage increases totaling $1.55 in the following years beginning at $0.30 and climbing to $0.50 in the final year. Benefit improvements include employer contribution increases to employee health insurance and pension plans, as well as additional paid holidays and sick leave.
Hongkong & Shanghai Hotels, the owner of Quail Lodge, closed the hotel portion of the resort on November 15, 2009. The company has announced it will reopen the 90-room hotel, The Quail Lodge & Golf Club, in April 2013.
“This is very hopeful news for Quail Lodge workers – dozens of hotel jobs are returning and we have a good contract with wage and benefit increases secured for the next five years,” commented lead Union negotiator and Secretary-Treasurer, Leonard O’Neill. “We appreciate the commitment to a better future and cooperative spirit put forward by Quail Lodge management,” added O’Neill.
Quail Lodge was purchased from the late Edgar Haber in 1997 by the 146-year old Hong Kong-based company, Hongkong & Shanghai Hotels.
Founded in 1937, UNITE HERE Local 483 represents 1,200 Monterey Bay area hospitality workers at two dozen hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, and golf courses.
