Tell the Bureau of Reclamation to Release Trinity Water to Avert a Klamath River fish kill
Comments due on July 27th
This year over 380,000 salmon are predicted to go up the Klamath River. This dream run of salmon could became a nightmare if there is not enough water to support the large run. Salmon returning to spawn are in desperate need for clean, cold water. Please support the Bureau’s current proposal to release up to 92,000 acre-feet of water to supplement flows in the Lower Klamath River, and ask that they also analyze additional flows from the Klamath River to support salmon that go up the Klamath beyond the Trinity.

Please request the BOR address the following four points in the EA/FONSI:
(1) The supplemental flow releases should begin in early August 1 to ensure that the flows in the lower Klamath River do not fall below 3200 cubic feet per second (cfs), and should continue though the entire salmon migration,
(2) All Trinity water allocated for the supplemental flows should be accounted for in a way that assigns any risk of shortage in 2012 or future years to water allocated for diversion to the Central Valley, not to the releases allocated to the Trinity River,
(3) The assessment should evaluate additional years beyond year 2012. Let’s make sure the salmon numbers stay high,
(4) Humboldt County has the right to their 50,000 acre feet of water in the Trinity. The assessment should confirm the validity of the Humboldt County’s water rights and the authority to use water under that contract for supplemental flows and other beneficial instream uses for salmon.

In addition to what is suggested, please ask the BOR to provide additional flows from the BOR's Klamath Project in the Upper Klamath River Basin. Here's what you can say:
Why are you refusing to release water on the Klamath-side in order to ameliorate poor water quality and assure that we don't have an adult fish kill? Please answer this question in the EA and assess the environmental impacts of failing to provide additional flows on the Klamath side (additional releases by BOR via "adaptive management" as promised in the KBRA).
And please don't be fooled about the Klamath Dam and Water Deals being promoted by American Rivers, Trout unlimited and others. These deals are marketed as coming from the grassroots and as being good for salmon. But in reality these are deals engineered by corrupt federal officials to serve the 1% at the expense of the 99%. Don't be fooled; oppose Mike Thompson's Klamath River legislation!
