Racism and oppression is out of control in the city of Oakland. Recently, a transgender woman, Brandy Martell, was murdered in front of her friends. Not only has the police and city council been ineffective in stopping crime, they also use it to cover their tracks. The unchecked power of the police smashed the Occupy movement, regularly abuse youth of color, and murder unarmed people.

Recently, the OPD murdered another unarmed youth, Alan Blueford, who was weeks away from graduating from Skyline High School.

Whether it be police brutality or the murder of the oppressed, a movement needs to be built to stop violence. We must demand justice from a police department that is out of control and the city council that protects them. Join us for our panel discussion about how to build a movement that can unite the people of Oakland to win justice and take down all systems of oppression.

SPEAKERS:

-Adam and Jeralynn Blueford, The parents of Alan Blueford

-Jack Bryson has been an outspoken activist against police brutal- ity since the murder of his son’s friend Oscar Grant

-Talishia Massey, sister of Brandy Martell

-Ashley Simmons is a member of the ISO and has been a leading activist in the fight for LGBT liberation in the Bay Area since 2008

-Crystallee Crain, Lead Faculty member of the Violence Prevention Initiative at the College of Alameda. She teaches politics, sociology and peace studies.

The OPD's job and whole reason to exist is to oppress the working and poor people of Oakland, especially the racial majorities (sometimes called people of color) and the sexually different (from straight folks). One cannot demand that they change. One has to abolish them, by any means possible.
