Pedestrian deaths and injuries are a major problem in San Francisco. More than 800 people are hit by cars in San Francisco each year, making it one of the most dangerous cities in the state - and possibly the country - for pedestrians. Residents over age 65 died at almost three times the rate as those under age 65. More pedestrians are hit inside crosswalks that outside crosswalks.
In addition to emphasizing pedestrian vulnerability, he Pedestrian Safety School will emphasize pedestrians’ rights to be free from vehicle violations, unsafe street, sidewalk and crosswalk design, and current pedestrian safety campaigns. The School will also emphasize pedestrians’ responsibilities and safe walking practices.
