A Felonious Hearing, A Smoky Day, and a Smart Protest: Protests Coming Up Quickly

by Robert Norse
Three events that might be worth attending...
Upcoming Protest Events of Possible Interest in Santa Cruz:

April 20th 9 AM Readiness for Preliminary Hearing in the Fabricated Felony cases of 7 of the Santa Cruz Eleven Dept. 6. I suspect the April 23 Preliminary Hearings scheduled to begin next week will be postponed as our (mine and Becky Johnson's) were. It will actually be a chance to see most of the 11 together in the same place for those who are interested. The http://www.santacruzeleven.org website is still in the "soon to be on line" state, looks like.

April 20th UCSC 4-20 Annual Smoke-Out (For the political dimension, see http://www.dailycal.org/2012/04/16/the-420-chronic-les-of-uc-berkeley/ ). Last year's rally at UCSC involved thousands with photos at http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2011/04/15/18677227.php . See also http://www.examiner.com/holidays-in-national/national-pot-smoking-day-2012-4-20-cannabis-events-around-the-world . I can't find any local announcements about the event, but it has drawn thousands in the past.

April 21st Earth Day Frolics Green capitalists sport their wares on the green at San Lorenzo Park, while ghosts of homeless people driven away last December 8th from Occupy Santa Cruz by dozens of cops in riot gear still haunt the area. Rumors of re-Occupation continue to float about. Smart Meter opponents plan a political protest (see http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2012/04/17/18711503.php ).

Gary and Free reminded me on the air last night that Gary Johnson has a Reexamination of Sentencing Hearing two hours from now in Judge "Grim Gavel" Gallagher's courtroom. Johnson was sentenced to 2 years for protest sleeping outside the Courthouse on a bench with a sign "Sleep is Not a Crime"; he's already appealing an earlier sentence of 6 months in jail for the same crime a year and a half ago. Read more about his case at http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2012/03/27/18710213.php and http://www.beckyjohnsononewomantalking.blogspot.com/search/label/Gary%20Johnson .

Gary's attorney, Ed Frey, faces contempt of court charges for not wearing a coat and tie to court as directed by the same GG Gallagher. That hearing will be April 27th 1:30 PM in Grim Gavel's court.

Ed courageously continues his support of Occupy Santa Cruz, holding noon strategy meetings on Sunday at the courthouse steps, and regularly attending many General Assembly meetings. He also was attorney for Occupy Santa Cruz activists who challenged the City's attack on the San Lorenzo Park encampment last winter, as well as being a defendant himself in the Peace Camp 2010 cases, currently appealing a 6 month jail sentence from Gallagher.

He faces $35,000 sanctions from a federal court for bail revocation of Chris Doyon ("Commander X") in the Anonymous "attack" on the SC County website in support of Peace Camp 2010 December before last. This is the second time Doyon has jumped bail on Ed Frey (who earlier put up $500 to bail him out in August 2010 in a PeaceCamp bust

Doyon also recently failed to appear at a local hearing for 647e charges (the anti-protest "no lodging" law being used against both the homeless and Occupy Santa Cruz with gloomy regularity), according to his attorney Jay Leiderman of Santa Barbara.

Meanwhile Linda Lemaster, the last outstanding PC2010 defendant, still faces 6 months in jail for allegedly sleeping on the steps of the courthouse in August 2010 with a sign criticizing the anti-sleep policies of the city and county towards the homeless. Her attorney is Jonathan Gettleman (see http://www.hearthbylinda.blogspot.com/2012/02/time-for-change-laws-that-punish-and.html )

I particularly like Linda's take on D.A. Bob Lee's Wells Fargo River St.. Prosecutions:
"WHO OPENED THE VACANT BANK BUILDING IN THE MIDDLE OF TOWN during a windstorm that was literally blowing homeless people across the concrete streets?\ And why are we letting The Law frame known activists for this, and inviting vigilante snitches instead of investigating the actual "crime"? The Kellet motion was denied, this morning, if I understand correctly.

After that hearing, I wandered over to courtroom 6 and listened to that judge juggle SantaCruzEleven scheduling issues.

Right now I am checking on the status of the #SleepfulProtest at #FederalHall by #SleepOnWallSt protestigators. Latest news; the National Park Service has apparently issued a map, temporarily relocating the public entrance to Federal Hall and 'creating' a free speech zone (maximum capacity 25 people, via Safir ruling?), coincidentally located where the Sleepful Protest crowd has been protest sleeping.
