Time:

Event Type:
Protest
Organizer/Author:

Location Details:
San Lorenzo Park at Water St., Santa Cruz
This Saturday, Ecology Action is holding an Earth Day celebration at San Lorenzo Park from 11am to 5pm, celebrating the Earth and environmental protection. Unfortunately, top staff at Ecology Action are publicly promoting projects that seriously undermine ecological and human health, such as PG&E's smart meter program.
At the height of the smart meter controversy last year, when PG&E was preparing to come into the County to install (illegally), Ecology Action staff member Mahlon Aldridge appeared twice on a PG&E flyer declaring that "smart meters are essential to a sustainable energy future." This is in spite of the fact that there still is no independent study showing environmental benefits from the smart grid, and substantial evidence showing harm. But that doesn't seem to matter to Ecology Action, which collects millions of dollars from PG&E every year, and also pays Mahlon's six figure salary.
See flyer and watch our interview with Mahlon at Ecology Action HQ here: http://stopsmartmeters.org/2011/08/01/mahlon-aldridge-santa-cruz-cty-resident-on-smart-meters/

More detailed analysis of the problems with mainstream environmental organizations ignoring smart grid damage can be found here: http://stopsmartmeters.org/2011/07/26/the-green-sheen-wearing-thin-how-corporate-environmental-organizations-are-providing-cover-for-the-mounting-ecological-catastrophe-of-the-%e2%80%9csmart-grid%e2%80%9d/
Saturday is also Electromagnetic Radiation Action Day -see: http://www.EMRActionDay.org so we're going to protest and "out" Ecology Action's support of the smart grid, and question why environmentalists are in denial about the health effects of wireless radiation.
Meet at the "Green Evolution" table on Saturday at 11:45am If you can't find us, look around for the signs. We'll have flyers for you to pass out. Please bring handmade signs- here are some ideas to get you started:
Sign ideas:
Smart Grid = Human Health and Environmental Catastrophe
Mahlon Aldridge (#3 at Ecology Action) is a Corporate Shill
Wireless Proliferation = Silent Spring
Ecology Action, PG&E Puppet
Smart Meters Hurt the Environment and Your Health
"Wireless = Class 2B Carcinogen"- World Health Org.

We'll see you at 11:45am on Saturday- Thanks for standing against false climate solutions and corporate greenwash!
See you Saturday! Please spread the word to you environmentalist friends! Contact info [at] stopsmartmeters.org for more information

Touchy Earth Day organizers may attempt to ban you, claiming the San Lorenzo Park area is "privately leased" for the day. Have your videocameras, lawyers, and defense funds ready.
After all, by announcing this event as a protest, you may be accused of "felonious conspiracy" as some of us who walked in an anti-foreclosure parade last November and subsequently reported on the 75 River St. events were. We face 7 years in prison each.
(See http://www.indybay.org/uploads/2012/04/17/who_s_next.pdf and http://www.indybay.org/uploads/2012/04
/17/a_letter_to_the_community.pdf at http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2012/04/17/18711497.php).
Unfortunately, it can happen here.
I may be around reporting on the event for Free Radio Santa Cruz and HUFF (Homeless United for Friendship & Freedom) as well as monitoring how homeless people are treated there. Call in to Free Radio Sunday 9 AM to 1 PM to report how things went (831-427-3772)
