The LAFCO meeting will be held in the Board of Supervisors’ Chambers, located on the 5th Floor of the County Governmental Center, located at 701 Ocean Street in Santa Cruz (Ocean and Water Streets).

This is our LAST CHANCE to fight and stop the Long Range Development Plan. This plan to develop upper campus and expand the university nearly double its size will have huge effects upon the biodiversity of the area as well as put a huge strain upon Santa Cruz’s already scarce fresh water resources. Will UCSC Be Allowed To Pave Over The UCSC “North Campus”?
This Is Going To Be Decided on Wednesday, March 7th

On Wednesday, March 7th, the Santa Cruz County Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) will decide whether or not to allow the City of Santa Cruz to extend its scarce water supplies to serve the currently unserved “North Campus” area at UCSC.

If the answer is “Yes,” the University will build 3,000,000 square feet of new buildings on what has been a “natural reserve.” 240 acres of timberlands and habitat will be paved over. The University has asked for 152 million gallons of water per year to serve this new development. LAFCO may seek to require a “water neutral” form of development, but if LAFCO says “Yes” to an extension of water service, the 3,000,000 square feet of new buildings will be constructed.

The LAFCO meeting will be held in the Board of Supervisors’ Chambers, located on the 5th Floor of the County Governmental Center, located at 701 Ocean Street in Santa Cruz (Ocean and Water Streets).

Long Range Resistance invites you to an important "hearing" so that the voices of the forest may be heard:

We will form a circle outside and enter the LAFCO meeting as a group.

On the morning of March 7th, the final legal block to UCSC's planned expansion into the forest of Upper Campus is expected to be lifted. Upper Campus is outside of the Santa Cruz city limits, which means that LAFCO (the Local Agency Formation Commission, a state agency) must grant approval for water and sewer service extensions before any development can happen.

UCSC's current expansion proposal calls for building on 240 acres in what is now forest and chaparral & housing up to 2,000 additional students. Long Range Resistance is a coalition of people on and off campus who are dedicated to creatively resisting UCSC expansion through community education, grassroots organizing and direct action.

Let's gather together to remind the powers-that-be that destroying the unique ecological and cultural landscape of Upper Campus is not an acceptable option. Let's remind them that we are communities with the courage to resist their destructive and unsustainable agenda.
