OAKLAND – It was a busy late afternoon and evening at the Tassafaronga Youth Urban Farm & Community Garden, on February 27. One of many local sites for activities for Occupy Our Food Supply day, [ http://ran.org/occupy-our-food-supply ], a global day action initiated by the Rainforest Action Network, the garden hosted a work party; the sharing of a nutritious meal, much of which was made on site using greens from the garden and other locally sourced foods; a history of, and progress report on, the garden; and information sharing, networking, children playing, and general schmoozing.
The community garden is part of the Tassafaronga Community Center, located at 975 85th Avenue in East Oakland. (The community garden is located at the far end of the ball field behind the rec center, and has an entrance on 83rd Avenue.)
Kelly Carlisle, founder and Executive Director of the Acta Non Verba:Youth Urban Farm Project [ http://www.anvfarm.org/ ], talked about how the garden was started, the progress it has made, and the vision for it's future.
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons from 4 to 6 pm are regular volunteer times for the Tassafaronga community garden. For more information, contact the Tassafarona Recreation Center: (510) 615-5764 or http://www2.oaklandnet.com/Government/o/opr/s/facility/OAK029397
