6th Annual San Francisco Kwanzaa Celebration

What: SAN FRANCISCO -- The Village Project and the Bayview Y, in collaboration with community organizations, present 6th Annual Kwanzaa Celebration. The celebration presents seven days of free events with thirteen events throughout San Francisco to celebrate the seven principles of Kwanzaa. Each event begins with a spiritual ceremony, followed with a feast and entertainment and a lighting of one of the seven candles of the Kinara. Several events feature live entertainment, including local blues and jazz vocalist Lady Mem’fis on opening night (Dec. 26th), the one women play: Harriet Tubman, The Underground Railroad, (Bayview Y on Dec. 28th), a keynote address by Dr. Brenda Wade, author & host of the TV show, Black Renaissance on Tuesday, Dec. 27th at City Hall and Tuskegee Airman Les Williams, author of “Victory: Tales of a Tuskegee Airman at Marcus Book Story, Sunday, Jan 1, 2012.

Created by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966, Kwanzaa is celebrated annually by more than 30 million people worldwide, over seven days from December 26 to January 1.The values of Kwanzaa, Nguzo Saba (The Seven Principles), are critical tools for addressing the issues facing the African-American community.

Adrian Williams is the founder of The Village Project, a youth service organization focusing on education and cultural enrichment for youth and their families in the Western Addition. She has revived the celebration of Kwanzaa throughout San Francisco, by connecting traditionally African American communities for this celebration.
