Occupy Oakland: Gardening, Tree Sitting

by Bay Area Occupier
Oscar Grant Plaza is no longer the campsite for Occupy Oakland, but it has not been left behind by the movement.

Local gardeners built new planter boxes for the park. (A previous planter box was stolen by the police.) The five planters have starters for various greens, herbs as well as some flowering plants. Wood chips were spread around the area. There are plans to expand the garden. The rest of the park's former lawn is mud. Aside from the rain, the city has been frequently running sprinklers to keep people off the space.

On the border of Oscar Grant Plaza, Running Wolf and an Anonymous protester are still maintaining a tree sit. The tree sit began a week ago by Running Wolf, with the second tree sitter joining more recently. At this point, there is still no injunction against climbing the tree, nor is there an injunction against giving aid to the tree sit. The tree sit protest serves as an anchor to the plaza, and draws media and public attention to the Occupy Oakland movement.

While Occupy Oakland has a new home-camp, the plaza still serves as an essential backdrop.
