SECOND VETERAN IN AS MANY WEEKS INJURED BY OAKLAND POLICE

On the night of Tuesday, November 2, 2011, another veteran of the Armed Forces was severely injured at the hands of the Oakland Police Department. He is currently in the Intensive Care Unit in an Oakland hospital. His name is currently being withheld at his request.

He was at the scene of the disturbance that happened after the General Strike that occurred earlier that day and was charged with resisting arrest and remaining present at the place of a riot. The veteran said he was beaten with nightsticks in his hands, shoulders, ribs, and back. He suffers from internal bleeding and a lacerated spleen.

This is the second time in as many weeks that a veteran has been injured at the hands of the law enforcement officials in Oakland. As you may recall, Scott Olsen; who is a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War and who was deployed to Iraq twice; received a fractured skull and brain swelling when a law enforcement official fired a tear gas canister and it struck him.

We at Iraq Veterans Against the War stand by our fellow veterans and denounce the police brutality that our brothers in arms endured. We stand by to support them in any way possible.

"Sabehgi's bail was posted in the mid-afternoon, but he said he was unable to leave his cell because of the pain. The cell door was closed, and he remained on the floor until 6pm, when an ambulance was called. He was taken to Highland hospital – the same hospital where Olsen was originally taken after being hit in the head by a projectile apparently fired by police. Sabehgi was due to undergo surgery on Friday afternoon to repair his spleen, which would involve using a clot or patch to prevent internal bleeding."
