Occupy Oakland Port Strike A Success!!

by Rubble
Hear an ILWU representative announce at close to 9PM that the 7PM shift workers had been sent home, making the 3-shift work stoppage a success as part of the General Strike. Occupy SF had a strong and very visible presence in solidarity. (3:33)

The plan was to block the Port entrances until 7PM, when the last daily shift reports. Shortly after 7PM word was getting around that the bosses might have shifted the work schedule to 8PM. Shortly after 8PM, we were told that we needed to continue holding a picket line until an arbiter certified some type of unsafe working conditions to protect the workers from reprisals for not reporting.

Some activists may have stayed at the Port to continue the action later into the night. Others marched back to Downtown Oakland for more activity at the Occupy site. Enthusiasm was extremely high. A whole city can be transformed when traffic is off the streets and people are together on it well into the night.
