Demonstrators Joined by Occupy Santa Cruz for Protest and Noisemaking at County Jail
March and Noise Demonstration in Solidarity with SHU Hunger Strike
In support of a massive hunger strike by prisoners held in California prisons, which originally began at Pelican Bay State Prison and spread to over a dozen other prisons, community members gathered at Laurel Park on the evening of October 8th. Demonstrators marched to the Santa Cruz County Jail where they made noise and gathered in solidarity with the prisoners held in the local jail as well as the prisoners on hunger strike across the state.
Marchers handed out fliers as they made their way down Pacific Avenue and on to the county courthouse where they picked up members of Occupy Santa Cruz, who were at that time still engaged in post general assembly meetings. The larger group which then numbered approximately 75 people marched across the street to the county jail, making noise and shouting chants in unison, such as, "the passion / for freedom / is stronger than all prisons," and, "no prisons / no borders / fuck law and order." People brought a variety of noisemakers, including musical instruments and five gallon plastic water jugs to drum on.
