Lupe Fiasco Shows Support for Occupy Oakland on Day Two, 10/11/11: video

by Dave Id
Knowing that hiphop artist Lupe Fiasco was set to perform at the Fox Theater on Telegraph Avenue in Oakland on the second day of Occupy Oakland, numerous tweets went out days in advance asking for his support. Lupe Fiasco came through, perhaps more than expected, with donated food, supplies, tables, tents, and a generator. He even made a personal appearance during the evening's General Assembly to express solidarity with Oakland and the broader Occupy Wall Street movement, as seen in the first video here.

There will be hiphop performances by Ras Ceylon, Boots Riley, and others this Thursday evening at Occupy Oakland.

During what he called the "PSA portion" of his show, Lupe Fiasco encouraged everyone to support local homeless shelters and food banks, to do what they could to help their neighbors. He then spoke of Occupy Oakland in the video here, asking those in attendance to drop by the occupation going on within blocks of the Fox Theater. He appears to know the history of Bay Area hiphop as he says Rest in Peace to Mac Dre, mentions Too Short and Mistah FAB, and credits Spice 1 with blowing his mind on hiphop in the sixth grade, before he goes on to rap an old Spice 1 song a capella. Lupe Fiasco gave an energetic performance throughout the show, the crowd enthusiastically bumping along all the way through the final song, when a Palestinian flag was waved all across the stage as water bottles and a super-soaker were emptied onto the audience in front.
