OccupySF Resists Raid by Police and City Workers After Midnight, 10/6/11: photos, 2 of 2

by dave id
On the evening of October 5th, after hundreds marched throughout downtown earlier in the day, the San Francisco police department delivered a letter to occupiers declaring that "this encampment is a violation of law." At 1:15am, police in riot gear moved in to create a line between occupiers and their supplies. SF Department of Public Work's employees then pulled up trucks on Market Street and began to clear out the site, taking the camp kitchen, tents, furniture, and more. Occupiers resisted by building a barricade around police and the DPW trucks. Demonstrators physically placed themselves in front of the departing trucks repeatedly on Main Street. One person was arrested on Main Street after having been assaulted with a nightstick. These photographs are a continuation of the series begun at https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2011/10/06/18692416.php.

by Terry Baum For Mayor
IS THIS DEMOCRACY IN
SAN FRANCISCO – OR WHAT???

Mayor Ed Lee, elected NOT by the people of San Francisco but imposed on us by the Board of Supervisors, has decided that the peaceful protest of OCCUPY SAN FRANCISCO must end.

In EGYPT, people were allowed to occupy the center of Cairo – but HERE, they tear down our tents!?!

THIS IS AN ATTACK ON FREE SPEECH AND DEMOCRACY IN SAN FRANCISCO!

I strongly denounce Mayor Lee’s attempt to crush dissent in San Francisco. With this act, Lee makes clear that he intends to represent the interests of the billionaires who live here, who don’t want their peace disturbed, rather than the brave and visionary citizens of San Francisco camping outside the Federal Reserve. We are joining a nationwide movement to protest a government that acts to increase the wealth of the wealthy at the expense of those who are suffering from unemployment, eviction, and drastic cuts in service.

WHO DOES MAYOR LEE REPRESENT? IF THE EGYPTIANS CAN PROTEST, WHY NOT THE CITIZENS OF SAN FRANCISCO?
