FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GYPSY JAZZ FROM THE BALKANS - LACHE CERCEL AND THE ROMA SWING ENSEMBLE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA TOUR - SEPT. 28 – OCT. 5, 2011
Mill Valley, Mission/San Francisco, Santa Cruz, and Berkeley
Since being invited to perform at the Mill Valley Djangofest, Lache Cercel and the Roma Swing Ensemble will tour the San Francisco Bay area for the first time, Sept. 27 th. – Oct. 6th. Lache Cercel is a Romanian violinist virtuoso and composer that became one of Romania’s biggest stars and was awarded the Artist of the People Citation from the Romanian government, before immigrating to Canada. Since then, he specifically picked a group of elite musicians to help create and perform a gypsy jazz sound that is reminiscent of Stephen Grappelli and Django Reinhardt, but complimented with Lache’s personal brand of authentic traditional Roma flare. This world-renowned ensemble is known as the Roma Swing Ensemble, which represents the latest chapter in an important movement in Canadian World Music. They will be accompanied by guest artist Yelber (Ben) Alia, a phenomenal Albanian accordionist.
"On compilations like Transylvania and compositions like Romanian Rhapsody, Cercel’s violin whispered down the spine and seared the heart." - Mark Tunney, The Telegraph-Journal, Saint John NB
"Polished is also the word for Lache Cercel ... the Romanian violinist turned out an ...
impeccable, even flashy, program of Romani jazz"- Alexander Varty, The Georgia Straight, Vancouver BC
