On Thursday, August 11th, members of the Prisoner Hunger Strike Solidarity Committee held a vigil in front of the Superior Courthouse, Oakland, to show continuing support of CA SHU prisoners struggle for human rights.

From July 1st through 20th, thousands of prisoners in the state of California, composed of all races, went on a hunger strike. They united around five core demands raised by Pelican Bay Prison inmates directed against human rights abuses.

1. End Group Punishment & Administrative Abuse.

2. Abolish the Debriefing Policy, and Modify Active/Inactive Gang Status Criteria.

3. Comply with the US Commission on Safety and Abuse in America’s Prisons 2006 Recommendations Regarding an End to Long-Term Solitary Confinement.

4. Provide Adequate and Nutritious Food.

5. Expand and Provide Constructive Programming and Privileges for Indefinite SHU Status Inmates.

The courageous protest of the prisoners as well as the solidarity of thousands of people around the world have been successful in exposing the illegal and inhuman conditions that tens of thousands of inmates are subjected to at the hands of California’s prison system.

The prisoners have vowed to continue the fight until the CDCR (California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation) ends its illegal policies and practices.

Prisoner Hunger Strike Solidarity Committtee will hold another vigil Thursday, August 18th, 5-7 PM at the Superior Courhouse, 1225 Fallon (at Oak) in Oakland.

Join us Tuesday August 23rd at the State Capitol for a rally and public hearing to continue the struggle!

11:30am: Rally at the North steps
1:30pm: Public hearing on conditions and policies of the Security
Housing Units at Pelican Bay, inside the State Assembly
