In October 1911 after at least ten attempted popular uprisings, the Chinese people, led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, succeeded in overthrowing the Qing Dynasty. The Revolution brought to power a democratically-minded government, but resistance from the warlords and the right-wing of the ruling Kuomintang Party subverted Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Three Principles of the People. The outcome of the ensuing civil war was the second Revolution of 1949. Two distinguished speakers will examine the conditions that led to the Revolution of 1911, and how the century of struggle and nation-building that followed created the modern China of today.
