How to Slow BART Trains for Social Justice - BART Action April 8th, 2010: video
As another BART action later today responds to yet another BART police killing, demanding accountability for the officers involved in the shooting death of Charles Hill on July 3rd and the disbanding of the entire BART police force, here is video from a similar action that started inside of the Embarcadero BART station in April 2010, demanding the firing of BART officer Tony Pirone. While other factors were certainly involved, Tony Pirone was fired just two weeks after the demonstration. That protest inside of the BART system was the first of its kind, in location, size, and the ability to disrupt BART service throughout the evening commute. Tony Pirone, unfortunately, is now likely to be rehired by BART at the behest of labor mediators who appear to find no fault with the violence or lying of police officers, as a mediator recently was instrumental in the rehiring of BART officer Marysol Domenici despite her unprofessional and aggressive behavior on the platform when Oscar Grant was murdered and her perjury during Johannes Mehserle's preliminary hearing. But since the April 2010 demonstration -- with the energy of the justice for Oscar Grant movement focused primary on the trial of Johannes Mehserle -- BART has found itself largely free of public pressure for accountability. Today, that just might change.
