"While painting an uplifting portrait of Duong, the documentary attempts to address the mystery behind his killing." - Los Angeles Times.
ENFORCING THE SILENCE is a hour-long documentary that unlocks a thirty-year-old mystery surrounding Lam Duong, a Vietnamese American community worker in San Francisco who may have lost his life for expressing his beliefs. This film reveals the life and death risks that Vietnamese refugees and immigrants have faced for exercising their freedom of speech - rights they believed were protected in America. Mixing personal interviews with historical and present-day footage, Tony Nguyen's debut film provides a disturbing in-depth look at a war-torn community that continues to struggle to find its place in a democratic society.
In partnership with the Vietnamese Youth Development Center (VYDC), ENFORCING THE SILENCE will make its San Francisco debut on Thursday, July 21, 2011 - the 30th anniversary of Lam Duong's death.
Half of the proceeds from the evening's screening will go towards the VYDC, the center Lam Duong founded. San Francisco Board of Supervisor Jane Kim, who represents District Six home to the VYDC, will be moderating the post-film discussion.
Please join us for this historic one-night only event.
