KPFA Records 6.5% Increase in Listener Support YTD

by Tracy Rosenberg
Recently released financial statements confirm a listener support increase for KPFA-FM of 6.5% or $133,000 more in listener pledges year-to-date than in the same 8 month period (October to May) 12 months ago.
Berkeley's KPFA, the first listener-supported radio station in the nation, now in its 62nd year, is rebounding from a frightening interval of steadily declining listener support and 2 years of large operating deficits, with a heartening show of listener support that, in combination with necessary expense-cutting, has staunched the bleeding.

A modest year-to-date surplus of $210,000 was achieved by;

1) An increase in listener support of $133,000 (a 6.5% increase over the year-to-date totals of May 2010) and an overall increase in all forms of financial support of 4.9%. (Support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting declined).

2) A decrease in total expenses of $318,000 (an 11.4% decrease from the year-to-date totals of May 2010). Expenses showed increased spending on programming (up 17% by $27,000) and decreased spending on fundraising (down by 18% or $47,000), community events (down by 18% or $18,000) and salaries/benefits (down by 19% or $311,000 from 1.6 million to 1.3 million to date).

These net increases of $451,000 have converted 2010's year to date deficit (-$240,000) to 2011's year to date surplus of (+210,000).

While the last 4 months of the fiscal year can be tight, and it is unclear whether KPFA will be able to maintain black ink all the way to September 30th, it can be said assuredly these trends indicate that there will be no large operating deficit in the 2011 fiscal year and there has been *no* loss whatsoever to date in listener support and overall revenue for KPFA.

A big thank you is due to KPFA's loyal listeners who continue, in hard financial times, to be stellar in their support for local radical radio.

Keep it up! Even if there is no fund drive in progress, you can always make a donation, small or large, online at kpfa.org.

With gratitude,

Tracy Rosenberg

People should keep in mind that we had more pledge drives in the last 8 month period than in the same period last year. We had an extra pledge drive in December and a 23 day long pledge drive in May which is 4 days longer than normal. So in some sense, you are comparing apples and oranges. 5 drives a year is not an advisable strategy for the long term.

KPFA scheduled 4-5 extra days of fundraising in 2011 in order to project 2.5 million in listener revenues realistically. The extra fund drive (1 week in December) was wildly successful, raising $362,000 in a week, as it makes sense to ask for funds in December which is when the majority of charitable donations are made. It seems sensible to institutionalize some fundraising in December and it is likely that next year's budget will incorporate that, in addition to the 3 regularly scheduled marathons in September/October, February and May. It might make sense to prioritize December over the previous "summer minithon" as the results were considerably better.

I think expenses should be in line with what can reasonably be expected from 3 annual marathons and 1 minithon (about 2.3 to 2.5 million in listener support and 3.3 to 3.5 million in overall revenue.)

I've been listening for a few years now, enjoying the music, news and some of the other programs. But you have too many fund drives, and they are very long. After a year or so of listening, I subscribed and now do so regularly. I didn't do it because someone taked for hours about it. I did it because I realized that it was a value to me to support this thype of station. But, I just turn the radio to another station when I hear you’re fund raising. It’s just bad radio, and I don’t need to hear it.

It seems like by now, you would have figured other ways to raise money. I used to work for a non-profit and our development director was always coming up with creative ways of raising money.

Yes, everyone hates fund drives, but the only replacement public radio has ever been able to come up with is accepting underwriting advertisements, which Pacifica doesn't do.

I don't know what the budget was for your nonprofit, but I'd guess it was either quite a bit smaller than KPFA's 3.5 million annual budget, or it had some pretty substantial operational support from a number of foundations or the government. KPFA is 85% listener/individual donation-supported so it depends on membership donations solicited during fundraising marathons and doesn't garner the majority of its budget from foundation grants.

The December fund drive was successful only because listeners were mortified at Rosenberg and her gang cancelling the Morning Show and laying off staff. It still raised way less money than previous winter fund drives.

You can see the dollar figures here: http://www.savekpfa.org/kpfa-listeners-vote-with-dollars

After all that, Rosenberg and her allies ignored KPFA's listeners' wishes, installed unresponsive managers, took more money for anti-union lawyers, and generally continuing to destroy the station.

That's why listeners are now moving to RECALL ROSENBERG. Read all about it here: http://www.savekpfa.org/recall-rosenberg

The scariest thing about Save KPFA might be the inability to count and read a financial statement. KPFA's financial statements can be found posted on here on Indybay.

KPFA's week of fundraising in December 2010 (an extra fund drive that was added on) was the most successful week of fundraising the station experienced in more than four years, raising $362,000 in a week or more thn $60,000 a day.

Overall in the 2010-2011 year, KPFA has raised 6.5% MORE in listener revenue this year than last year.

KPFA has a $210,000 surplus. In 2009-2010, KPFA LOST $585,000. In 2008-2009 KPFA LOST $575.000.

These are the facts.

You can yell that the earth is flat as much as you like.

I guess it would be an honor to be the first nonprofit board member in the history of the world recalled for assisting with beginning to restore financial health to an organization that was running big operating deficits :)

Makes you wonder a bit how these folks define the word "save".
