Save Oakland Libraries, Arts Programs and Stop Austerity Measures in Oakland

Date:
Tuesday, June 21, 2011
Time:
5:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Event Type:
Meeting
Organizer/Author:
Sandy Sanders
Location Details:
Oakland City Council Meeting, City Hall at Frank Ogawa Plaza, 14th & Broadway, Oakland, CA, Tuesday 5:30 pm

Oakland City Council is deliberating Austerity Measures such as closing all but 4 Libraries including the African American Museum & Library. Tool Libraries, Arts and Cultural Programs and many other cuts are being considered. Come voice your support for maintaining our city services.

The State Legislature has been logjammed by a cheapskate Republican minority hiding behind a 2/3rds rule required to pass tax increases. Consequently the rich and corporate have enjoyed many years of decreasing proportional tax burden while our state, counties and cities have been defunded by ever decreasing tax revenues. Restoration of taxation of the top 2% and corporations would eliminate these budget crises. The City Council's Budget Scenario C includes a Parcel Tax of $80, but this option would also require cuts. The only long term solution is a re-establishment of adequate taxation of the rich & corporate.
