Community Protest Will Greet Release of Johannes Mehserle
A community protest has been called for the day that Johannes Mehserle is released from jail. Mehserle is the former BART police officer convicted of killing Oscar Grant, a young unarmed African American man, on New Years Day 2009. A press conference held at the Frutivale BART station in Oakland on June 1st announced the call to action.
The Coalition for Justice for Oscar Grant has called for two protests in Oakland the day Mehserle is released. The first is at Fruitvale BART at 3:00 pm and then at Broadway & 14th Street at 5:30 pm. Mehserle was sentenced to only two years and was given credit for time served prior to the conviction and since.

Accoding to today's KTVU-TV (Channel Two ) news at Noon Mehserle will released Monday 6/13 Not Sunday 6/12 .(Which makes sense because except for very rare occasions Court hearings are never held on weekends )
If so Wouldn't it make sense to postpone the rally and march until Monday ? Aside from the symbolism of responding on the actual day of Brother Grants's murderer's being freed Far more people would witness our rally/march on Monday .
Downtown Oakland is deserted on Sundays.
